– If they sleep separately, it is harder to connect for the mother and the child, it is harmful to brain development and can lead to behavioral problems in later years, says pediatrician Dr. Nils Bergman of the University of Cape Town.

Observing 16 newborn babies, Berg found that those that are put to sleep in separate beds, slept worse than babies who slept with their mothers. It has been established that the babies who slept separately were under three times bigger stress than the babies who slept with their mothers.

– Changes in the brain that occur due to release of stress hormones can impede the creation of quality relationships later in life and lead to different behavioral problems, says Bergman.

Some studies have linked common sleeping with increased risk of death in the cradle, but Bergman says that babies that suffocate or die during sleep is not because the mother was with them. It happens because of other things, toxic smoke, cigarettes, alcohol, big pillows and dangerous toys.

British organization National Childbirth Trust supports common sleep if parents do not smoke, do not drink, do not use drugs and are not excessively tired or sick.

On the other hand some experts believe that the safest place for baby to sleep is his bed, placed in the parents’ room.
